Watch the magical moment a mom with cancer is surprised by her son and new granddaughter

Brenda Overson of San Tan Valley, Arizona, couldn’t have been happier as she prepared to visit her son Nick Hancock and his pregnant wife Julia in Brazil. But then, a shocking diagnosis tore her world apart.

“I found out that I had a stage three C ovarian cancer. And so, my plans to go to Brazil were put on halt,” says Overson. “So, June 26th I had my surgery. And then I had to undergo six rounds of chemo.”

With his wife soon to give birth and in the process of filing for U.S. immigration, Brenda's son Nick had a tough decision to make.

“It was really hard. I couldn't wait to get back, but it felt even harder being away from my wife, you know?” says Hancock. "So, I had to choose between staying there and coming back to the U.S., and I just couldn't live without my wife, so I decided to ride it out until the immigration process was done.”

Thankfully, an appeal to the U.S. consulate expedited the process. And, after Julia had given birth to a girl named Zara, Nick, his wife and baby were able to head to the States, though they kept their return a secret from Brenda.

“During that time I was still going through chemo. I was still feeling very sick and still struggling with my health,” says Overson. “And, you know, we knew that they were trying to get to the United States, but we didn't know when. At least I didn't know when. I had met Julia before, but I had not met my granddaughter yet.”

“I was scared my mom was going to find out,” says Hancock. “And so what I did was I printed out my itinerary for my flight and I had my wife Photoshop it to where it looked like I was coming a few weeks later, so I could show my mom a fake itinerary, and it said that I was gonna be there like a month later or something than my actual date. But really, I was gonna be there early.”

Ahead of Nick’s arrival, his sister-in-law came up with the idea of surprising his mom using a viral magic trick. And so, with everyone assembled for what Brenda assumed was a normal family gathering, Nick, Julia, and Zara hid behind a blanket ready for the big reveal.
