Edward James Olmos, Ashley Tisdale, Nick Cannon, more stars share their health struggles

"Young and the Restless" alum Eric Braeden was diagnosed with cancer after experiencing problems with his prostate. The actor experienced symptoms ranging from frequent urination to none at all, he shared in a 13-minute video posted to Facebook on April 21.

Braeden had a UroLift procedure in the hopes of relieving pressure from his urethra. The problems were not alleviated so he decided on getting a second opinion and doctors found "low-grade cancer cells" near his bladder that were removed. A biopsy also found "high-grade cancer cells," which the actor is undergoing immunotherapy to treat. "I hate to be this personal but I think this may be good for some older guys who may or may not listen to this," Braeden said in his video.

Ashley Tisdale opened up about being diagnosed with alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, in a video on Instagram and her lifestyle website Frenshe. Tisdale shared that she first experienced it in her 20s at the front of her hairline and again recently after dealing with moving, a home renovation and a TV project. "Nothing major—just a small section behind my ear—but still, it was happening, and not for the first time. A few years ago, the same thing happened when I was overly stressed, so I knew exactly what I was experiencing: alopecia," she wrote.

Although the actress said she was initially "embarrassed" to talk about it, she's found strength in others who have. Tisdale said her alopecia is largely stress-related and found prioritizing self-care, an autoimmune paleo diet and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment when she is experiencing hair loss are some things that have helped.

Nick Cannon revealed in 2012 that he has a form of Lupus that affects his kidneys. In January 2022, the TV personality looked back at his health journey 10 years after being diagnosed.

"Just a few days ago I was with my family in the snow, playing, having a good time," he narrates in a video testimony he documented while discovering his health complications. "All of a sudden I started swelling up, had shortness of breath, excruciating pain in my right side."

In December 2022, the comedian and actor posted a photo from a hospital bed on Instagram saying he'd come down with pneumonia a day after hosting "Wild N' Out Live" at Madison Square Garden.  "So I guess I’m not Superman ... I promised myself I would never be back at this place again. ... But this is a great lesson to take care of YOU or YOU won’t be able to take care of everyone else," he wrote with the hashtag #LupusWarrior.

Country singer Devin Dawson opened up on Instagram Nov. 6 about his dysphonia diagnosis, which he says has "severely affected my talking voice and my singing voice in the lower ranges." The "All on Me" singer says he's been struggling with the condition for almost 10 months. 

"One of the hardest parts of this has been just getting everyone up to speed individually and having to almost relive how much it sucks not to be able to talk or sing the way I want to," Dawson wrote on Instagram. "nobody wants me to make another record more than I do. I promise you that. And I will." 

Johns Hopkins Medicinedescribes muscle tension dysphonia as " a change in the sound or feel of your voice due to excessive muscle tension in and around the voice box."

Kasie Hunt, anchor and chief national affairs analyst for CNN, has a new lease on life since having a brain tumor removed a year ago. In a Twitter thread posted in October 2022, Hunt shared she is"completely healthy and can physically live my life as though it never happened."

But Hunt said she "learned so much" from the experience, including the importance of personal health and relationships. "Most people aren’t forced to grapple with the real possibility they’ll be gone when they are still otherwise young and healthy," she wrote. "The things I learned that my heart can no longer forget are the things so many of us know but often fail to act on in a focused, daily way: The people we love and the health of our bodies matters more than anything else ever can or will.

Katie Couric revealed in an open essay published Sept. 28 on her website that she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a mammogram in June, which detected abnormal results.

Couric appeared on "Today" with her former co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on Oct. 3 and revealed she "finished radiation last week." (I'm) just so grateful that they caught it early enough so it could be treated," she said. The television personality has Stage 1A breast cancer, which is treatable. Couric has been an advocate for regular health screenings ever since her first husband Jay Monahan died from colon cancer in 1998.

"Bob Hearts Abishola" star Billy Gardellis opening up about slimming down after the actor lost over 158 pounds on his weight loss journey. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published Sept. 26, Gardell attributed bariatric weight loss surgery, which he underwent last July, and the reexamination of his eating habits with helping him lose weight.

"You have a small window to change the way you live, the way you eat, the way you exercise, and so far I've been able to do that," Gardell told the outlet. "I do it a day at a time and I'm just so, so very grateful that that happened for me. No more diabetes, no more bad blood numbers.

"West Side Story" star Rachel Zegler took to social media Sept. 24 to share her experience with a breast cancer scare when she was 19. "Two years ago I found a lump in my breast and went through what was undoubtedly the scariest week of my life," she wrote on her Instagram Stories, per E! News. "No OB/GYN was taking new patients due to the backlog of the pandemic, but I was fortunate to have the care of my pediatrician who prescribed me an ultrasound, which led to an out-patient biopsy procedure."

"Thankfully it was benign, and now the scar serves as a reminder to check my breasts regularly for any irregular growth — the fibroadenoma in my left breast is a common occurrence but nevertheless extremely scary to find," she continued. "Early detection saves lives!!!!"

Actress and singer Maureen McGovern revealed on her website that she has been "diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy with symptoms of Alzheimer’s and/or Dementia."

"I struggled with the inevitable shock with fear and frankly hopelessness," she wrote. "But slowly I realized that my inner life has not changed. My passion for music, for singing, remains profoundly robust."

Posterior cortical atrophy "refers to gradual and progressive degeneration of the outer layer of the brain (the cortex) in the part of the brain located in the back of the head (posterior)," according to the Alzheimer's Association.

During her Netflix documentary "Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl," released in July 2022, country music icon Shania Twain opened up about the physical toll Lyme disease took on her singing voice. Twain said she contracted the disease toward the end of her "Up! Tour" (which ran from 2003 to 2004) after getting bit by a tick while horseback riding.

"My symptoms were quite scary because before I was diagnosed, I was onstage very dizzy. I was losing my balance. I was afraid I was going to fall off the stage," Twain revealed. "I was having these very, very, very millisecond blackouts, but regularly, every minute or every 30 seconds."

Despite releasing the No. 1 album "Now" in 2017, the Grammy-winning singer said her "voice was never the same again."

"I thought I'd lost my voice forever," she said. "I thought that was it: I would never, ever sing again.

"Game of Thrones" actress Emilia Clarke revealed in March 2019 that she suffered two life-threatening brain aneurysms during her time on the HBO drama. Clarke opened up more about the health ordealin an interview with BBC's "Sunday Morning" in July 2022. “The amount of my brain that is no longer usable — it’s remarkable that I am able to speak, sometimes articulately, and live my life completely normally with absolutely no repercussions," she said. “I am in the really, really, really small minority of people that can survive that.”

She also humorously shared that she's seen a scan of her brain following the aneurysms. “There’s quite a bit missing, which always makes me laugh," she said. “Because strokes, basically, as soon as any part of your brain doesn’t get blood for a second, it’s gone. And so the blood finds a different route to get around, but then whatever bit it’s missing is therefore gone.

Emily Blunt hosted the American Institute for Stuttering's Freeing Voices, Changing Lives gala on July 11 where she discussed having a stutter and how being an actress helped her with speech. She told People magazine that "people don't talk about (stuttering) enough(and) it hasn't got enough exposure."

Blunt began to notice her stutter around age 6 or 7, she said. "It's biological and it's often hereditary and it's not your fault. And I think it's very often a disability that people bully and make fun of," she said. "It's a big deal for me to be here.

Danny Bonaduce has been battling a mystery illness recently. "The Partridge Family" star spoke out about his health struggles for the first time while on ABC News on June 27. "I couldn't walk at all. I couldn't balance, I couldn't do anything like that," Bonaduce explained of his symptoms, which he began experiencing in April.

He explained his wife Amy Bonaduce noticed his speech was impaired. "She looked really nervous, and she (said), 'You're not saying words, you're not speaking English,'" Bonaduce said. "Which of course is preposterous to me. We called an ambulance and took me to the hospital, where I remained for the first five days and remembered very little of it."

While Bonaduce still does not have a definite answer on what possibly could have gone wrong, he said doctors ruled out a stroke after conducting an X-ray. "I just immediately said 'stroke.' I'd seen my dad have a stroke, it was the same thing. I couldn't walk, I couldn't keep my balance, I slurred really badly, I couldn't remember anything," Bonaduce explained. "And this amazing miracle of medicine, they said, 'You did not have a stroke.'"

"General Hospital" actor Cameron Mathison told People magazine on June 24 that he is getting professional help from a health coach to learn more about staying healthy after undergoing surgery to treat kidney cancer in 2019. "I work with a health coach now — I thought I knew a lot about what I was doing in the right and the wrong ways or whatever, but in the last year, I'd say, maybe 14 months, I've learned more about my own specific health challenges and growth than I have probably in decades before that," Mathison told the publication.   
 
In 2019, the former "All My Children" star shared he had renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer. As a result, he underwent partial nephrectomy surgery, a procedure in which doctors remove a tumor but only take out a small portion of the kidney.

Former "Bachelorette" contestant Cam Ayala shared an update on his recovery after undergoing amputation surgery on his right leg. Ayala, 32,shared a series of photos on Instagram of himself recovering, taking steps in a hospital hallway, and captioned them: "Gotta lotta BROMENTUM with @b.rapp." In a series of hashtags, Ayala referred to himself as a "#CAMputee" and included another hashtag "#FAITHoverFEAR." A week before surgery, Clay reflected on his surgery, writing: "Life is full of FIRSTS and LASTS."

In 2018, Ayala revealed he was diagnosed with lymphedema in 2002 but never made it public. According to the Mayo Clinic, lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's lymphatic system. It commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also affect other parts of the body.

Singer Tems revealed on her Instagram June 14that she has to "take some time off" after being diagnosed with Reflux laryngitis, leaving her to cancel two upcoming shows. 

"It breaks my heart to say this but there is no other option for me. I'm not feeling too good at the moment," she wrote. "I am so sorry for this inconvenience but I promise to be back better than ever by the grace of God. Then I'll give you the best show ever."

Country singer Toby Keith revealed he has been battling stomach cancer for much of the past year in a June 2022 Instagram post. "Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer," he wrote. 

"I've spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery," Keith continued. "So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax. I am looking forward to spending this time with my family. But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.

Justin Bieber, who's been open in the past about his Lyme disease diagnosis and contracting "a serious case of chronic mono," revealed in a June 2022 Instagram post that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by facial nerve paralysis. "As you can see, this eye is not blinking," said Bieber in the video, referencing the left side of his face. "I can't smile on that side of my face. This nostril will not move. So there's full paralysis on this side of my face."

Although the singer had to cancel performances on his Justice World Tour, Bieber said he'd be using his time off to "rest and relax and get back to 100%." "In the meantime, this ain't it," he said. "I'm doing all these facial exercises to get my face back to normal, and it will go back to normal. It's just time, and we don't know how much time it's gonna be, but it's gonna be OK. And I have hope, and I trust God, and I trust that... it's all for a reason.

Lance Bass revealed that he was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Bass told People in a May 2022 interview that he was diagnosed five years ago after experiencing debilitating symptoms for some time. "I had symptoms before, but you know, I kind of just dealt with it, not knowing exactly what it was. I was a dancer my whole life, so I just kind of figured it was because of dancing," the NSYNC singer told the outlet. 

"It definitely started in my shoulders and then in my knees," he said. "And again, to me, that was just such a sign of dancer pain, so I just thought it was completely normal, totally ignoring the signs.

In May 2022, Halsey opened up to fans on social media about receiving a slew of new health diagnoses after spending time in the hospital. “My health has changed a lot since I got pregnant and gave birth," the singer said in a series of Instagram Stories. "I started getting really, really, really sick. I've been kind of sick most of my adult life, but it started getting really bad (after giving birth)," Halsey continued, noting she is "allergic to literally everything" and was hospitalized for anaphylaxis.

The singer then said she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Hailey Bieber opened up about the "scariest moment of my life" in April 2022. In a YouTube video titled "telling my story," the model talked about a recent health scare, revealing she had a follow-up procedure after her March 10 "mini-stroke" to close a hole in her heart. Bieber began the video saying the day had a typical start, with her and Justin Bieber sitting for breakfast together.

"We were in the middle of talking, and all of a sudden I felt this really weird sensation that traveled down my arm from my shoulder all the way down to my finger tips," she said. When Justin asked if she was OK, Bieber said she "couldn't speak" and that "the right side of my face started drooping. I couldn't get a sentence out." She continued: "Immediately, I thought I was having a stroke, like a full-blown stroke.

Karen Duffy, former MTV VJ and model, opened up about her life with chronic pain in her new book "Wise Up: Irreverent Enlightenment from a Mother Who's Been Through It'" Released April 12, 2022, it is written in the form of letters to her teenage son Jack. Duffy has endured a long battle with sarcoidosis, a disease characterized by the growth of tiny collections of inflammatory cells in any part of your body. But she has found meaning in her health journey.

"I always try to think what is the upside to having your life turned upside down? Maybe it's to appreciate every moment — and have a sense of deeper compassion for people living with chronic pain," she told People in April 2022. "My body may be breaking down but my spirit is ginning up. I wanted to express gratitude for my life.

Brian Austin Green revealed to social media followers in April 2022 that he had been "pretty bedridden" while dealing with ulcerative colitis for the past six weeks. Ulcerative colitis is an "inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers (sores) in your digestive tract," according to the Mayo Clinic. 

Green expressed gratitude to his girlfriend, Sharna Burgess, for taking care of him and his children while he was recovering. "I'm back now. I'm feeling good. Thank goodness," he said in an Instagram video. "It was a terrible experience. I'm glad it's over.

Selma Blair revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and has continued keeping social media followers in the loop with candid posts about her highs and lows with the disease. In March 2022, she reflected on her health journey in an emotional video for MS Awareness Month. "May we all find the strength to persevere," she wrote alongside clips of herself, first in the hospital and then in moments of triumph.

Stanley Tucci first revealed in September 2021 that he was diagnosed with cancer at the base of his tongue in 2017. Since then, he's opened up more about his battle, telling People magazine in March 2022 that he is "incredibly lucky" to be alive. "They couldn't do surgery because the tumor was so big. It's a miracle that it didn't metastasize. It had been in me so long," the "Devil Wears Prada" star said, noting that he struggled with taste and smell for years.

He credited his wife Felicity's "undying attention" for helping him through it, and he is now cancer free and enjoying foods again.

Amy Schumer has detailed overcoming her battles with endometriosis and Lyme disease. "I feel good. Finally," the actress and comedian shared in January 2022, listing a few her ongoing health issues. In September 2021, Schumer, who has also been open about her struggles with infertility, revealed she had her uterus and appendix removed as a result of endometriosis, a condition in which tissue typically found in the uterus starts to grow in other parts of the body, leading to uncomfortable long-term pelvic pain during and between periods.

In 2020, Schumer also shared a Lyme disease diagnosis on Instagram. "Anyone get LYME this summer? I got it and I’m on doxycycline. "I have maybe had it for years," Schumer wrote.

Adult film star Jenna Jameson updated fans on her ongoing health struggle on Jan. 10, posting a video to Instagtam. Lying in a hospital bed in Hawaii, Jameson revealed that "doctors suspect" she has Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the body's nerves, according to Mayo Clinic.

Jameson thanked fans for their messages of concern and support and said she has "started my IVIG treatment. I am in the hospital and will likely remain here until treatment is complete." Jameson added: "I hope to be out of here soon.

On Dec. 31, Ricki Lake opened up on Instagram about her hair loss struggles. The talk show host wrote commemorated the two-year anniversary since she took "a leap of faith" and publicly spoke about her hair loss battle: "I finally surrendered and came out about my decades long struggle with hair loss (and shaved my head.)" She adds it was "so scary and so liberation," but that the journey since has been "such a gift."

"Self-love and acceptance has been the great takeaway," Lake wrote. "And 2 years later, I sit in total gratitude for the journey. Thank you to my friends, loved ones and role models who helped me along the way to loving myself exactly as I am."

In a video posted to Instagram on Dec. 28, actor and singer Jada Pinkett Smith opened up to fans about her ongoing struggle with alopecia, the autoimmune disease that often causes hair to fall off the scalp in "small, round patches," according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. 

"Now at this point, I can only laugh," Smith said in the video, in reference to a new bald line spot. "It just showed up like that, and this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I'd just share it so y'all are not asking any questions."

After running her finger over the bald spot, Smith joked about making a rhinestone crown to place on it. "Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!" she concluded the post's caption.

"Love It or List It" co-host Hilary Farr revealed to People that she is now in remission after a years-long private battle with breast cancer that dates back to 2012. Farr's medical ordeal included a trio of lumpectomies and a round of radiation treatment in 2015.

"Fear of breast cancer stops a lot of women from getting checked," the HGTV star told People. "But as terrifying as it is, you face it."

She added: "Thinking that you should keep it a secret or just power through doesn't help, and it doesn't heal. If I can change that for one person, then that's enough."

While discussing COVID-19 vaccine mandates and Colin Powell on his talk show "Inside Politics," CNN anchor John King shared on Oct. 19 that he has multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system. "I am grateful my employer says all of these amazing people who work on the floor, who came in here in the last 18 months when we are doing this, are vaccinated now that we have vaccines," King said.

Rachel Maddow revealed on her primetime show Oct. 6 she was diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent surgery to get rid of it. "I want to use this moment to tell you something, which is: you should get checked," the 48-year-old political commentator said. She added that her surgery was successful.

During a Septemberappearance on "Rachael Ray,""Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts, 60, spoke about her previous myelodysplastic syndrome diagnosis and how she needed a bone marrow transplant surgery to survive. "My doctor told me I had a year or two to live if I didn't have a successful transplant," she recalled.

It was Roberts' sister, Sally-Ann, who eventually became her donor. "My other siblings were not a match... It came down to my sister Sally-Ann," she said, explaining she double-checked that her sister would be willing. "My sister said, 'Not only is this something I want to do, I feel I was born to be (your donor).'

Former "Bachelor" star Kelley Flanagan tearfully revealed in an Instagram video August 30 that she's been diagnosed with Lyme disease. "It’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely gonna be a lot of changes, and I guess I’m just gonna incorporate you guys in it," she said in her video.

Sofia Vergara opened up about being diagnosed with thyroid cancer 21 years ago during theStand Up To Cancer telecaston August 21. 

"At 28 years old during a routine doctor's visit, my doctor felt a lump in my neck. They did a lot of tests and finally told me I had thyroid cancer," the "Modern Family" star said. "I tried not to panic and I decided to get educated…I also learned that in times of crisis, we're better together.

Christina Applegate revealed August 10 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis a few months prior. "It’s been a strange journey," the Emmy Award-winning actress tweeted. 

"But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some (expletive) blocks it.

Comedian and actor Andrew Dice Clay announced that he isn't letting his health struggle get in the way after he posted about his Bell's Palsy diagnosis. According to the Mayo Clinic Bell's Palsy is a temporary weakness of facial muscles. Clay posted a photo of himself on Instagram Aug. 5 doing a stand-up comedy routine in New Jersey, captioning the photo: "It Don’t Matter … Palsy Face Or Not !!! Untouchable …"

Former "Bachelorette" Ali Fedotowsky announced she was diagnosed with shingles, which she called "a painful neurological condition that usually affects seniors."

"I don’t really know why I wanted to hide it," Fedotowsky, 36, wrote in anInstagram poston July 30. "I think it’s mostly because I didn’t want the added stress or pressure of the Internet while I was trying to rest and heal. In fact, stress is likely the reason I got #shingles. I’m sharing now because I hope my story will help others detect it early. I didn’t even think it was possible to get it at my age.

Yvette Nicole Brown says she developed "full-blown diabetes" while filming "Community," in which she portrayed Shirley Bennett, after "excessively eating sugar" on set. On Dr. Priyanka Wali and Sean Hayes' "Hypochondriactor" podcast, she said, "I got diabetes, or gave myself diabetes, by eating a lot of donuts on the set of 'Community.'"

She continued: "I spent a lot of time at the craft services table, and I watched myself get bigger and bigger. And if you watch the show, you can see me get bigger and bigger. And I got a pre-diabetes diagnosis maybe in season one, and then by season three it was full-blown diabetes."

Since her Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, Brown said she's cut down her sugar intake but hasn't cut it out completely: "I believe everything in moderation.

Jessie J opened up on Instagram about how acid reflux has affected her ability to sing. 

The "Bang Bang" singer was dignosed with Ménière’s disease in 2020 after being hospitalized for having problems with her hearing and balance. "I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn’t walk in a straight line," Jessie J said on Instagram Live in December. "Basically I got told I had Ménière’s syndrome."

The singer gave her followers an update on her health in June saying that the steroids she took for her ear problems caused her to have major acid reflux and nodules on her vocal chords. 

"Every doctor has told me if I sing ... the nodules will just come right back," she wrote on June 18 on her Instagram story. "My biggest lesson my whole life has been my health." 

She added: "I know I'm being faced with this because I can handle it." 

According to Mayo Clinic, Ménière’s disease is a "disorder of the inner ear that can lead to dizzy spells (vertigo) and hearing loss." It's a chronic condition that can be relieved with various treatments and medications.

In a series ofInstagram stories, E! News' Morgan Stewart revealed on June 9 that she had been diagnosed with a thyroid condition after feeling "completely off" for nine weeks. "(The doctor said) she's incredibly surprised to find this, but my thyroid is so off the charts in overdrive, it's basically in outer space," Stewart wrote. "Thyrotoxic was the term she used to describe it. We immediately went to her office and she explained that it could be one of three things: a nodule on my thyroid, Graves' disease or sub-acute thyroiditis (all things that can be triggered by pregnancy).

"General Hospital" actress Kirsten Storms opened up about her brain surgery in an Instagram post on June 6. "I spent the last few years having random health issues that I disregarded as side affects (sic) to my medications or just something I was experiencing due to age," she wrote, adding that doctors eventually found a "large, very full of fluid, cyst" during a recent MRI scan.

"I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it. I’m not gonna lie, brain surgery had me nervous, but I’m immensely thankful to my family, friends, and incredible 'work family' who have been supportive, kind and loving during a time when I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions," Storms continued.

Singer Tank, left, born Durrell Babbs, revealed on Instagram on May 12 that he's losing his hearing. "I'm going completely deaf in my right ear and I’m kind of losing sound in my left," he said.In an update shared a day later, the singer explained he had more testing done and luckily didn't see anything related to his brain even though his hearing tested worse. "Hopefully that starts to turn around quickly," he said.

Aiko reflected on her battle with anxiety and addiction in a heartfelt postto Instagram on March 16, sharing that she's suffered "loss, depression, addiction."

"I've spent most of my life with crippling insecurity... feeling awkward and shy in front of cameras and audiences. I've spent most of my life not understanding that my anxiety was causing a downward spiral, self medicating and self sabotage," she wrote.

But the singer concluded that she'ss "become a stronger, clearer vessel of love, truth and light" after opening herself up to more opportunities and getting sober. "I will never be perfect, nor do I ever want to be seen as such...but when you see me, know you are looking at a fighter.

Mayim Bialik revealed she's been in recovery for anorexia for the last two years on her podcast "Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown" on March 9. 

"This is the first time I've ever talked about it, because people are like, 'Well, why are you so overweight?' Well, because I'm a compulsive overeater in addition to being an anorexic and restricter," Bialik said while speaking with author/activist Glennon Doyle.

Kacey Musgraves reflected on how the pandemic affected her anxiety, and finding silver linings, in a February interview with Rolling Stone.   

“I’m someone who deals with anxiety by making sure I stay busy and moving,” she said. “And I haven’t had that luxury this year. So I’ve been forced to sit with my sadness, sit with my anxiety, sit with my anger, sit with all the things that you normally can outrun. I think that’s kind of a beautiful thing.

On Feb. 1, singer Tony Bennett revealed he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016. According to an interview he gave to AARP, he has not yet experienced common symptoms like disorientation or episodes of terror, rage or depression, "but there was little doubt that the disease had progressed."

Gayatri Devi, M.D., a neurologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan who diagnosed the 94-year-old singer, said Bennett has some “cognitive issues, but multiple other areas of his brain are still resilient and functioning well.

On Jan. 13, Red-hot country music star Luke Combs opened up to Dan Rather about his struggles with anxiety in an AXS TV special. Combs, 30, said he first experienced anxiety in middle school. He told Rather he has a form of obsessive compulsive order known as purely obsessional OCD, where people repeat mental rituals to cope with stress.

"I know when you see people that have OCD you think of them like messing with the blinds or straightening the carpet," Combs said. "Essentially my version of fixing the blinds or straightening the carpet is kind of thoughts that I play over and over in my head. "For example ... it'll be something about my health. Like I'll be worried that I'm about to have a heart attack or a stroke and it becomes this very obsessive thing that you can never have an answer to. That's kind of the awful part of it. You have to teach yourself to be comfortable with the fact you'll never get an answer.

In a cover story for Vanity Fair published Dec. 1, Stephen Colbert opened up about having "benign positional vertigo." Whenever Colbert stands up, he says he experiences the effects of vertigo. 

"It’s almost entertaining, until I forget,” he said. “And then I go to stand up, and then I just fall down. So, I’m coming to you right now from a very weird angle, slightly listing to port.

In a post to Instagram on Dec. 1, 2020, Keke Palmer opened up about her struggle with adult acne. "Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome has been attacking me from the inside out my entire life and I had no idea," she revealed in the post, where she put her bare skin on display. She also explained all the ways she's tried to manage her acne.

"The least harmful thing PCOS can bring is acne. To all the people struggling with this please know you’re not alone and that you are still so (expletive) fine!" she added.

On the Nov. 6 episode of the "Today" show, longtime weatherman and co-host Al Roker, 66, announced he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will undergo surgery, but he reassured viewers that he is "gonna be OK."

"Fortunately his cancer appears somewhat limited or confined to the prostate, but because it's more aggressive, we wanted to treat it, and after discussion regarding all of the different options — surgery, radiation, focal therapy — we settled on removing the prostate," Dr. Vincent Laudone, who will perform his surgery in New York City, said on the show.

On Oct. 23, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that he recently had a "new aortic valve" implanted in his heart.

"Thanks to the team at the Cleveland Clinic," Schwarzenegger captioned several photos, including one of him flashing a thumbs up in his hospital bed. "I feel fantastic and have already been walking the streets of Cleveland enjoying your amazing statues. Thank you to every doc and nurse on my team!" Schwarzenegger was born with a congenital heart defect. He previously had heart surgery in 2018 and 1997.

In an interview with GQ published Oct. 28, Armie Hammer opened up about his struggles during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Without paying attention, I had started down the path of completely imploding and letting my mental health lapse and allowing myself to end up in positions or situations that I knew were detrimental for me," he said.

After "a very intense wake-up call," the "Call Me by Your Name" star said he confided in a friend about his mental health problems and started working with a therapist multiple times a week.

"Having the time to sit with myself in quarantine made it painfully clear that I've got some improvement to do and that's the goal," he said. "That's the journey.

On Oct. 19, Jeff Bridges revealed on Twitter that he's been diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. 

"As the Dude would say.. New S**T has come to light," wrote Bridges, referencing his 1998 cult classic "The Big Lebowski." "Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good."

In January 2021, Bridges updated fans, saying his tumor "drastically shrunk." Months later, in Septemer, the actor said his cancer is in remission.

In an interview with Billboard in Sept. 2020,  Lady Gaga opened up about the mental health challenges she experienced after the "Joanne" world tour. "I used to wake up every day and remember I was Lady Gaga — and then I would get depressed." She continued, "I was peeling all the layers of the onion in therapy... as you dig deeper, you get closer to the core, and the core of the onion stinks.

On July 30, Tamar Braxton opened up about her ongoing battle with mental health nearly two weeks after the singer was hospitalized on July 16 after trying to take her life. 

"Mental illness is real," she wrote in a lengthy message on Instagram. "We have to normalize acknowledging it and stop associating it with shame and humiliation. The pain that I have experienced over the past 11 years has slowly ate away at my spirit and my mental."

She continued: "I will do everything in my power to aid those who from mental illness... It was only God’s grace and his mercy on my attempt to end my pain and my life that I am here to utilize my voice.

"Beverly Hills, 90210" alum Shannen Doherty, 48, revealed Feb. 4 on "Good Morning America" she had been privately living with cancer again during the past year. Her attorney, Devin McRae, confirmed to USA TODAY that her breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in March 2015, had metastasized and she suffered from a chronic respiratory illness.

"I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers and support," Doherty wrote February in an Instagram post. "It’s an odd time right now and I find my feet not completely underneath me.

In an interview with Vogue in January 2020, Katy Perry spoke out about battling depression, saying between 2017 and 2018 she was depressed in a way that she never was before.

"I became depressed and I did not want to get out of bed. In the past, I had been able to overcome it, but this time something happened that made me fall down too many flights of stairs," she said. "I had to really go on a mental health journey."

Perry said she wrote new album, "Smile", while she was "coming through one of the darkest periods of my life...This whole album is my journey towards the light - with stories of resilience, hope, and love.

Kelly Clarkson opened up about her own battle with depression during a conversation with Demi Lovato on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in June 2020.

"I love how open you are about mental health, because I have similar issues," Clarkson said in a clip. "I've suffered from depression.

Paris Jackson opened up about her struggles with self-harm and body image issues in a July 2020 episode of the Facebook Watch series "Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn." 

Jackson said she "fell into self-harm" when she gained weight following her father's death in 2009. "It was also a distraction from emotional pain and transferring it to physical pain. And a need for control," she said, adding that her depression "comes in waves.

In May 2020, Camila Cabello got candid about her obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in an essay published in WSJ magazine. The singer said her "anxiety manifested in the form of obsessive compulsive disorder."

"OCD can take many different forms, and for me it was obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. To put it simply, it made me feel like my mind was playing a cruel trick on me," she continued.

In an interview with UK's Sky News in March 2020, Scottish comedian Billy Connolly said he was "finished with stand-up" due to his Parkinson's diesease, adding that it "made my brain work differently... and you need a good brain for comedy.

Singer Jojo revealed in a People interview on April 29 that she was diagnosed with clinical depression 10 years ago. She also said she's been going to therapy and taking antidepressants since she was 18. 

“Because there is a history of mental health issues in my family, I didn’t feel any shame seeking help,” she told the outlet. “Those of us who have a predisposition toward depression or a chemical imbalance — sometimes we just need a little help.

"Real Housewives of New York" star Ramona Singer revealed in March 2020 that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. "We caught it early and I’m very lucky and very blessed,” she told E! News.

"Sopranos" star Jamie-Lynn Sigler first opened up about her MS diagnosis in 2016 after battling with the disease privately for 15 years.

In an interview with People on Feb. 27, 2020, Sigler shared that although she has her bad days and sometimes wishes she didn't have MS, she knows she wouldn't be who she is without it.

"I am dealing with it the best I can, I'm still independent. I just went on a trip alone to Punta Cana with my son," she said. "I'm still able to work and I have the energy to do all these things... does it slow me down physically in certain ways? Sure, but I've figured out in the 18 years of living with it how best to function and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything in life.

Actress Taraji P. Henson opened up about seeing a therapist to help her cope with depression and anxiety.

“There are some times where I feel absolutely helpless. That's human. Everybody feels like that,” she told Selfmagazine in December 2019. "That means talking to my therapist when I feel this way, doing things to get me out of the muck.”

In 2018, Henson launched her nonprofit, the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (named after her father, who also struggled with mental health issues), to combat the stigma around mental health in the African American community.

Lena Dunham revealed in November that she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome after being photgraphed using a cane. 

"The truth is just: This is what life is like when I’m struggling most with chronic illness. An Ehler-Danlos syndrome flare means that I need support from more than just my friends... so thank you, sweet cane!" she wrote on Instagram. Dunham had a total hysterectomy, which removes a woman's cervix and uterus, in November 2017 to relieve severe pain caused by her endometriosis, a disorder where tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus, according to Mayo Clinic. She had 12 surgeries related to the disorder.

Jamie Lee Curtis has been open about her sobriety. “As soon as I got sober, which is 20 years coming up in February, everything changed," she told USA TODAY in October 2018. "Because it was a big, big acknowledgment that I could not do all of the things I was trying to do.

Sia revealed in October 2019 that she's suffering from chronic pain and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

"Hey, I'm suffering with chronic pain, a neurological disease, ehlers danlos and I just wanted to say to those of you suffering from pain, whether physical or emotional, I love you, keep going," she tweeted. "Life is (expletive) hard. Pain is demoralizing, and you're not alone.

Jonathan Van Ness, the grooming expert on Netflix's "Queer Eye," revealed in September 2019 that he's HIV-positive.

"At the beginning (of 'Queer Eye') I was really kind of nervous to talk about my HIV status and not sure if I wanted to and how I wanted to," Van Ness tells USA TODAY. "And as I’ve continued to experience the world as I always have, it just became more clear to me that I wanted to be totally open with my story and be able to talk about it, especially in the face of (the Trump) administration.

Kim Kardashian learned in a September 2019 episode of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" that she had psoriatic arthritis, a chronic disease that can cause "joint pain, stiffness and swelling," according to the Mayo Clinic.

"The pain is gonna come and go sometimes, but I can manage it and this is not gonna stop me," she said on the show following her diagnosis.

Sarah Hyland has been vocal about living with kidney dysplasia, a condition that arises after abnormal kidney growth in the womb. She's had two kidney transplants and wants fans to know that having health issues is "not shameful."  She said in a 2018 interview with Self: “For anybody that wants to reach out to somebody but doesn't really know how because they're too proud or they think that they'll be looked upon as weak, it's not a shameful thing to say. It's not a shameful thing to share.”

In Jane Fonda's words, she's had "a lot of cancer." But the actress, now in her 80s, continues to work after sharing multiple stories of tumor removals.

Normally a pretty private person, Julia Louis-Dreyfus recently told USA TODAY she went public with her breast cancer battle in part because "Veep" production was about to start, but also because she saw it as an opportunity to influence lawmakers to fight for universal health care.  "My hand was kind of forced by virtue of the fact that we were about to start production, and I had 150 or 200 people waiting to get going on this show. So I thought, 'OK, let's make a virtue, if you can, of such a horrible moment,' " she said. Louis-Dreyfus announced in October she was cancer-free.

Nick Jonas announced to fans during his early Jonas Brothers days that he has Type 1 diabetes. More recently, he shared on Instagram that he prioritizes "physical health, working out and eating healthy and keeping my blood sugar in check," and reminded fans not to "let anything hold you back from living your best life.

"Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez has dealt with thyroid issues since she was 19 and more recently was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease, which can cause fatigue, memory loss, joint pain and weight gain. And the actress has been vocal about the ways she initially felt defeated by the disease, before deciding to tackle it head-on: “To the core of my being, I know what it’s like to feel like there is no way I can win this, so where do I even begin?” she recalled to Self in 2018.

Wendy Williams has taken a handful of breaks over the years from hosting "The Wendy Williams Show" in order to address ongoing issues with Graves' disease, another autoimmune disease, which causes the overproduction of thyroid hormones.

Gabrielle Union suffers from adenomyosis, a type of endometriosis that impacts fertility. The actress revealed to Essence the condition meant it took a while for her and husband Dwyane Wade to have a baby.

"Towards the end of my fertility journey I finally got some answers, because everyone said 'You’re a career woman, you’ve prioritized your career, you waited too long and now you’re just too old to have a kid – and that’s on you for wanting a career," she said. "The reality is I actually have adenomyosis.

Michael J. Fox has publicly battled Parkinson's disease for over 20 years. In 2018, he opened up about undergoing a spinal surgery and enduring difficult physical therapy sessions afterward.

Kristen Bell is an outspoken advocate for talking about mental health: The actress frequently gets candid about having dealt with depression over the years and urges others to do the same to lessen the "taboo" factor of mental health issues.

Selena Gomez has the same autoimmune condition – the Disney Channel alum announced she had a "life-or-death" issue with her kidney and had a transplant in 2017.

Fellow Disney Channel star Demi Lovato has publicly struggled with drug use and an eating disorder. In a 2017 documentary, Lovato revealed she still hadn't "conquered" the eating disorder and faced a relapse after splitting with her boyfriend of six years, Wilmer Valderrama.  “Food is still the biggest challenge in my life,” she revealed in the documentary. The actress was hospitalized in 2018 for an apparent overdose, but has since been celebrating her sobriety.

"Glee" alum Lea Michele began experiencing symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome around 2016, and she's opened up about suffering from side effects like weight gain and bad skin. 

"I went to a great doctor, and the minute she looked at me, she was like, 'Oh, you have PCOS.' It explained everything," she told People in September 2019. "Through diet, I have been able to manage it. But I am very fortunate. There are way more extreme versions of PCOS that women have a lot of difficulty with – mine is not as intense. Which is why I haven’t really talked about it, because there are women who have it so much more intense.

Singer Summer Walker talked more in November about suffering from social anxiety, saying it caused her to cancel most of her U.S. tour.

"I truly appreciate all the support and love. As you know, I have been very open about my struggle with social anxiety," the 23-year-old said on Instagram. "I want to continue to be healthy and to make music for y'all, so I have decided to cut down some of the dates on the tour. I hope you all can understand. I'm grateful for every single one of you, and I hope that you understand that wellness/mental health is important.
